Columbia, MD--  Herkimer Generals Women's Track & Field runner Chyanna Bernier (Ilion, NY) not only won the 10K race at the NJCAA National Championship meet, she did it while setting a new school record.  Bernier legged out the race in 39:40.95 crushing the last record by 10.85 seconds in obviously ominous weather according to the photo taken after the race.  The previous record held by Victoria Campanian from Glenfield, NY was also a National Champion in the 10K and 3,000m steeplechase in 2014.

Bernier also competed for the women's 3000 steeplechase Saturday morning which she also won for the title blazing through at 12:05.14.  This her third National title as she also won the women's 5K on Friday leading the pack at 19:15.41.  Chyanna Bernier has become a legend her freshman year as a General leading the cross country team to their first Region III Championship, set numerous personal records for the Swimming & Diving team as a first time swimmer, and has now led her team to a second place finish at Regionals and three National victories in her best events.  It is no wonder she earned her right as Herkimer Generals Female Athlete of the year for 2016-2017.

Malik

Bernier wasn't the only impressive local product this year.  Herkimer native Malik Briggs has become a prominent figure in the men's high jump event.  Briggs earned the nation's number one spot for men's high jump leaping an impressive 1.98m or 6 feet 6 inches well above the rest of the pack.  Briggs currently holds the Herkimer record for high jump at 6 feet seven inches which he set earlier this season at St. John Fisher.
