The 2019 edition of Phaethon has been named “best magazine in the small college eastern division” by the Community College Humanities Association. Multiple students have also taken home individual accolades for their contributions to the magazine.

Skyeler Brodkorb won first place in creative non-fiction with “Mistakes & Mischief,” Aubrey Ketcham won second place in fiction with “Small Talk,” and Alyssa Patterson was awarded second place in artwork for her charcoal drawing of Frida Kahlo.

This is the magazine’s first time being recognized as the best magazine in its division and also places Phaethon in the Top 10 publications in the nation, regardless of size.

Phaethon is the annual literary and arts publication of Herkimer College filled with artwork and creative writing. The publication has grown exponentially over the years with several individual awards for Herkimer College students from the Community College Humanities Association. Andrew Devitt, assistant professor of English; Blake Pitcher, associate professor of digital graphics; and Matthew Powers, English instructor, serve as the magazine’s advisors.

This award-winning issue’s student editors were fiction editor Elizabeth McDonald, Liberal Arts and Sciences: Science, and visual editors Julianna Finnerty, Business Administration; Andrew Gaillard, General Studies; Shaun McGraw, Communication Arts: New Media; and Ronald West, Communication Arts: New Media.

Their contributions to the creation of Phaethon have pushed the magazine to new heights and exemplifies the College’s new Communication and Media program’s impact.

Phaethon is now accepting student work such as artwork, photography, fiction, poetry, and more for the 2020 edition.
