Women swim to six Top 10 finishes in Nationals
HERKIMER, NY – The Herkimer Generals had their four best swimmers travel to Indian River State College (FL) last week for Nationals, resulting in six Top 10 finishes and a team-high 288 points. That point total, the most earned by a men’s or women’s swimming team at Nationals under Head Coach Vicki Brown, earned the Generals a ninth place finish.
Capturing the six Top 10 finishes were Alexandra Whalen (New Hartford, NY), Erin Hutchison (Macedon, NY), Kristina Reynolds (Sherburne-Earlville, NY) and Kaitlin Winnie (Accord, NY) as a group. Together they had four Top 10 finishes in the 400 yd. Medley Relay (5:50.11), 800 yd. Freestyle Relay (9:42.50), 200 yd. Freestyle Relay (2:00.94) and 200 yd. Medley Relay (2:21.09). Whalen had a personal best time in the 400 yd. Medley, Winnie had a personal best time in the 800 yd. Freestyle and Whalen had a personal best in the 200 yd. Freestyle.
The fifth Top 10 finish came from Winnie, in the 100 yd. Freestyle. She had three first place finishes in the event to date, posting a 1:00.53 in Nationals. It was 0.37 hundredths of a second slower than her school record in the event (1:00.16).
The sixth Top 10 finish came in the 200 yd. Butterfly, an event Reynolds placed first in at regionals, giving her a regional championship in the event. In Nationals, Reynolds had the highest individual finish, placing seventh in the event with a time of 2:37.59, just seconds away from All-American status.
The final notable time came from Hutchison. She knocked off 24.62 seconds from her 1650 yd. Freestyle, an event which gave her second-team All-Region honors. A time of 22:16.59 captured another school record for the Generals this season.
