Candle light vigil for McAvoy at Wehrum Stadium

Herkimer, NY--Herkimer College will hold a candlelight vigil this evening in memory of student Peter McAvoy who passed away suddenly on Saturday evening. The vigil will take place at Wehrum Stadium at 7 p.m. All are welcome.

A senior from Dundee, Scotland and captain of the men's soccer team, McAvoy collapsed suddenly in his Reservoir Run apartment on Saturday, and remained unresponsive despite lifesaving attempts by Campus Safety. He was quickly transported to Little Falls Hospital, where additional lifesaving attempts were made.  At this time, the cause of death is unknown. Dean of Students Matthew Hawes said, “Our deepest condolences are with Pete’s family as they grieve this tragic loss. Our thoughts are also with his teammates, coaches, friends, faculty and staff during this difficult time.” Counseling services are available to support any students or employees who may need assistance.  Additional information regarding funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.

McAvoy led the Herkimer Generals soccer team to two National Championships in 2012 and 2013. In 2013 McAvoy scored the game-winning goal in the National Quarterfinal, National Semifinal and National Championship, totaling 15 goals this season. It helped him earn the National Tournament MVP and helped the college collect their 10th National Championship.

McAvoy scored team-leading 15 goals in 2013; scored game winner in National Quarterfinal against SUNY Adirondack (3-1), National Semifinal against Richland Community College Thunderducks (2-1) and National Championship against Suffolk Community College Sharks (1-0).

McAvoy played on defense for Herkimer College, more specifically was a center back, helping the Generals outscore opponents 61-5 in 2013.

In two years McAvoy played 40 games, going 37-3 with 16 goals and 4 assists.
