Athlete of the Meet honors for both Williams and Campanian in Regionals
DELHI, NY – Continuing their solid performance into the Region III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at SUNY Delhi over the weekend, the Herkimer Generals men’s and women’s teams both finished in third place, with the men totaling 161 points and the women totaling 123 points.
Overall, the Generals saw the men capture All-Region honors in 10 events and the women do so in seven. Sophomore Wendall Williams (Syracuse, NY) did the best of all the men, earning first team All-Region honors in the 100-meter, 200-meter, High Jump and Long Jump. It’s the second consecutive year the two-sport athlete at Herkimer College has accomplished the feat, being named ‘Men’s Field Athlete of the Meet’ in 2014 thanks to an 11.00 in the 100, 22.58 in the 200, 1.98m in the High Jump and 7.03m in the Long Jump.
Just as accomplished as Williams over the weekend was Herkimer’s Victoria Campanian (Glenfield, NY). The freshman earned ‘Women’s Track Athlete of the Meet” for her first-team honors in the 5,000-meter Run, 10,000-meter Run and 3,000-meter Steeplechase and second-team honors in the 1,500-meter Run. Campanian placed in the Top 5 in all six of her events participated in, getting first place in the 5000, 10000 and 3000 Steeplechase.
Other All-Region members for the men were Joseph Shinn (New Rochelle, NY), Mich Brutus (Irvington, NJ), Sam Morrett (Cohoes, NY) and Thomas Gibb IV (Brooklyn, NY). Shinn repeated as a first teamer in the 110-hurdles (16.02), Pole Vault (3.40m), 4x100-meter Relay (42.44) and second teamer in the Decathlon. Brutus was a first teamer in the 4x100 relay and second teamer in the 100-meter (11.30). Morrett was a first teamer in the 3000-meter Steeplechase. Gibbs IV was a first teamer in the 4x100 relay.
Finally, for the women, Nadia Nowak (Albany, NY), Brittany West (Phoenix, NY) and Natasha Woods (Syracuse, NY) captured first-team honors in both track and field events. Nowak’s 1:03.97 in the 400-meter Dash did it on the track while West’s 1.86m in the pole vault and Wood’s 31.86m in the javelin got them in the field.
Herkimer’s next meet is at nationals, which is hosted by Mohawk Valley Community College this year. The Hawks will host the event for three days, starting on Thursday, May 8th.
