Eight players score to advance to Region III ‘A’ Championship Game
(Ben Polk got Herkimer on the board in the first half on an assist from Jermaine Windster, making it 1-0).
(Femi Kaffo scored in the 48th Tuesday, increasing the lead over Finger Lakes to 6-0).
(Daniel Riley scored the final goal of the game on a penalty kick, making it 8-0 in the 60th).
HERKIMER, NY – Having a different player score a goal in 90 minutes of play for the first time all season, the Herkimer Generals men’s soccer team cruised their way to an 8-0 victory over Finger Lakes Community College Tuesday (10/28) evening at Wehrum Stadium in a Region III Semifinal game.
Herkimer (15-0-1, 7-0) didn’t waste time scoring in this one. Within the first 18 minutes the Generals built a 3-0 lead on goals by Ben Polk (Banbury, UK), Shane Jenkinson (Dublin, Ireland) and Mitch White (Leicester, England). Polk’s came in the 15th on an assist by Jermaine Windster (Rotterdam, Holland), seeing the ball go past Laker’s goalie Brian Arcara right to Polk for the empty netter. Jenkinson’s goal came in the 16th on an assist by Femi Kaffo (London, England) and White’s came from Jenkinson in the 18th.
Scoring the final two goals of the first half were Rodrigo Guerra (Newburgh, NY) and Windster. Moulid Somow (Utica, NY) found Guerra in the 30th to make it 4-0 and then Guerra found Windster in the 35th to make it 5-0.
With the starters pulled in the second half, Herkimer built the lead with help from two penalty kicks. Kaffo and Daniel Riley (Woodford Green, Essex) nailed each of their attempts in the 48th and 60th to make it 6-0 and 8-0.
Scoring the third goal in the second half was freshman Occasion Brown (Bridgeport, CT). The midfielder connected with Jeff Castaneda (Franklin Square, NY) in the 55th to make it 7-0.
Splitting time in goal on Tuesday was Austin Santor (Chazy, NY) and Morrice Baker (Bridgeport, CT). In the first half Santor accumulated four saves while in the second half Baker did not collect one.
The Generals will play the Region III ‘A’ Championship game this Saturday, November 1st at Tompkins-Cortland Community College. Their opponent will be Genesee Community College, a team Herkimer just beat on the road in their last regular season game 4-0. Game time on Saturday is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
