Strong first half not enough at home for women’s basketball

(Herkimer's Emily Rexford sinks one of her two three's on Saturday in the varsity gym).

HERKIMER, NY – Despite double figures by Chelsea Jory (Herkimer, NY), Erica Tracy (Cobleskill, NY) and Kristy Wallace (Frankfort, NY) on Saturday (1/24) in the varsity gym, the Herkimer Generals women’s basketball team was unable to give Hudson Valley their fifth consecutive defeat, losing 78-66.

Herkimer (5-12, 2-7) played the sixth best team in the region tough throughout the first half. Led by Jory’s 12, Herkimer battled through four lead changes before the Vikings took the lead for good with six minutes left before intermission. The lead got to as many as six, but two three pointers by Jory, a field goal by Wallace and made free throw by Eriel Jenkins (Detroit, MI) made it 37-35.

In the second half, Hudson Valley went on a 10-2 run early putting the lead into double digits. It remained there until the final four minutes of regulation, seeing the Generals cut it to six (70-64) with 3:03 left. The last three minutes belonged to the Vikings, outscoring Herkimer 8-2, on their way to a 78-66 victory.

Up next for the women’s basketball team is Mohawk Valley Community College. The Hawks are ranked seventh in the nation, winning 14 of their last 15 games. Herkimer will look to break their three-game skid on Wednesday (1/28). Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
