'Come to the Table' at the Herkimer College Library

The Herkimer College Library is not only a wealth of information but also a place of engagement and action. And, throughout the fall semester, the campus community can take part in these efforts in the form of two interactive table displays.

One new initiative is the International Snack Table, found just inside the library entrance. According to Librarian Stephanie Conley, the table came about through the desire to foster a deeper relationship with the College’s thriving international student population. “Many international students use the library as a study space, but we would like to strengthen the connection to them while at the same time providing materials, resources, and books to assist the greater campus community in learning about the cultures and countries that our international students bring to campus,” said Conley.

The countries featured this month are China, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia. To create an authentic display, Conley said they spoke with the College’s Office of International Programming to obtain the list of countries from which the international students hail and gathered snacks and books from the library collection to showcase each country.

The display will change in November to feature snacks and information on European countries.

Located just outside the library entrance, students can also take meaningful action at the Amnesty International Club table. Amnesty International is global movement of more than 10 million people in over 150 countries and territories who campaign to end abuses of human rights. October is devoted to protecting free speech and drawing attention to those threatened or murdered because of their expression through recognition of Banned Books Week. While the international campaign ran September 18-24; students, faculty, and staff can act locally through the end of this month.
