Herkimer College adds JV Baseball and names Lane Potter Head Coach

Herkimer, NY – Herkimer College will be adding a JV baseball team for the spring 2019 season. Lane Potter, a two-year assistant coach with the varsity baseball team and alum of the program, has been appointed as head coach.

Head coach for the varsity program, Jason Rathbun, said, “We have had so much interest in our program over the last 14 years. With our development of talent, this will give an entire additional group of student-athletes the opportunity to get better and showcase their skills to four year schools.”

The new JV team will play four year JV teams, such as Utica College and Ithaca College, in a 15-20 game schedule. “This is an exciting opportunity for our program and for student-athletes who are interested in taking their game to the next level,” said Rathbun.

Potter is a 2010 graduate of Herkimer College.  In 2010, he helped the Generals win a regional championship and advance to the World Series in Tyler, Texas. After Herkimer, Potter received a scholarship to Brescia University where he was a two-year captain. He finished his junior season leading the team in home runs and RBIs.

Potter began his coaching career at SUNY Oneonta in 2014. Over the following three seasons, Potter served as infield coach and hitting coach for the Red Dragons in the SUNYAC Conference. During the summer of 2014 and 2015, Potter was an assistant coach for the Oneonta Outlaws of the NYCBL. During his time with the Outlaws, Oneonta won the Eastern Division title both seasons.

Potter returned to his alma mater to join Rathbun and the Generals staff in the spring of 2016. During his two years as an assistant coach, the Generals have reached the regional championship game twice. Potter also is an area coordinator for the Residence Life and Housing department and additionally will continue his current role as assistant varsity baseball coach and recruiting coordinator.

During Potter’s coaching career, he has coached nine players who have gone on to the professional ranks.

Potter, an Oneonta native, is a 2010 graduate of Herkimer College with an associate degree in liberal arts. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Brescia University.
