Herkimer College Waives Tuition for College Now Students

Herkimer County Community College (Herkimer College) will waive tuition for high school students enrolled in its concurrent enrollment (dual credit) program, also known as College Now, this fall.

The recently enacted New York State budget included language authorizing the State University of New York to reduce or waive tuition and/or fees for dually enrolled students who earn college credits at their high schools. As a result, the Herkimer College Board of Trustees voted to approve the waiver of tuition for College Now courses for the 2019-2010 academic year. Tuition for College Now courses is currently $65 per credit hour.

Herkimer College President Cathleen McColgin said, “Granting high school students early access to college is essential in today’s competitive world. This is a tremendous opportunity for families in our community, and we are pleased to be able to provide greater access to college.”

Herkimer College’s College Now program provides high school students the opportunity to take college-credit bearing courses taught by college-approved high school teachers. Students gain exposure to the academic challenges of college while in their supportive high school environment, earning college credit at the time they successfully pass the course. The opportunity to earn college credit while in high school gives students a head start when they enter college, and often they can graduate from college early, resulting in significant savings of time and money.

Accredited by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment (NACEP), the College Now program has grown to include participation by 17 schools and Herkimer BOCES. A total of 719 high school students have enrolled in College Now courses this school year, many taking multiple courses.

District Superintendent Sandra Sherwood said, “On behalf of the Herkimer BOCES school districts, I thank the Herkimer College Board of Trustees for waiving tuition for dually enrolled students in our region. This will be a tremendous help to the struggling families in our region and is another way to help move our community forward.”
