Become an agent of change in the field of human services. Our innovative curriculum is constantly evolving to provide students with the skills necessary for employment after graduation. Opportunities to take cutting-edge courses, engage in practical experience within the field and involvement in our vibrant Human Services Club provide students with the foundational skills and experiences employers want!

Beginning in the fall 2019 semester, Human Service students will have the opportunity to choose between newly offered alternative courses and the existing course work as follows:

  • Chemical Dependency OR Developmental Psychology
  • Trauma Informed Care OR American Government
  • Group Counseling OR Marriage and Families
  • Mental Health Association of NYS (MHANYS) CarePath ™ Program OR Social Psychology

The Chemical Dependency, Trauma Informed Care, and Group Counseling courses provide students with an opportunity to gain exposure and knowledge in relevant topics in the areas of study related to chemical dependency, how to develop and facilitate a counseling group and understand the continuum of wellness as it relates to various forms of trauma.

Offered in the student’s final semester, the MHANYS CarePath ™ program provides an unprecedented opportunity for graduating students to become certified CarePath ™ coaches through the Mental Health Association of New York State. Herkimer College is the first two-year college to partner with MHANYS to provide the CarePath ™ course and certification. Students who successfully complete the CarePath ™ program with their Human Services A.A.S. degree will obtain certification to help individuals and families manage stress the first 90 days post discharge from any treatment through methods of reducing stress, promoting confidence, avoiding crisis, reducing hospitalizations and improving overall health outcomes. Career opportunities are available at hospitals, law enforcement agencies, and human service agencies, both in the non-profit and for-profit sectors.

Student Testimonial

Emma VanderwerkenThe Human Services Program at Herkimer College is unique because it provides students with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge in class while simultaneously developing professionally in the work force.  Our program has great professors who are not only passionate about their work, but have an abundance of wisdom gained through years of experience in the field.  We take many classes focused on innovative methods of care, cultural competency, and the needs of the populations we will be supporting.

In addition, we complete internships to put skills learned in class into practice, while building our professional network that will help us after graduation.  Herkimer College also has a Human Services Club where members can develop leadership skills, meet other professionals in the field, and plan events or fundraisers on campus.  I feel that Herkimer College and the Human Services Program have done an excellent job preparing me for my future.

Employer Testimony

“I’m so impressed with the changes to the program so far.  There is a national addiction and mental health crisis where local agencies are stretched beyond capacity.  Students with relevant and updated course work are more likely to be hired post-graduation.  Students who are currently looking to pursue their BS degrees in related fields are being required to take these courses so it also gives students at Herkimer College an edge and a likely opportunity to move forward with their professional and/or educational endeavors.”

-Vicky Sloan, Online Learning Coordinator, Clinton Community College

Human Services Supervisor Testimony

“I am so beyond excited at the current and upcoming program changes. With the insightful feedback from both our students and Advisory Committee to the support I’ve received from my supervisory team, we’re embarking on unchartered territory to offer existing and upcoming students innovative opportunities. These opportunities that will provide critical knowledge that parallels current trends in the field with an opportunity to become employed immediately following graduation. The Trauma Informed Care course and partnership with the Mental Health Association of NYS demonstrates how broad the field is and showcases what Herkimer has to offer that other colleges do not. It’s an exciting time for the Human Services program and it’s only just begun!”
