#5 Generals lose in penalty kicks to #4 Camden

HERKIMER, NY – Despite scoring the first goal and leading until the 84th minute of Thursday’s (11/12) NJCAA DIII Men’s Soccer Quarterfinal game, the #5 Herkimer Generals were unable to hold off #4 Camden, losing in penalty kicks 4-2.

Herkimer (13-4, 5-1) got on the board in the 29th after a successful service from sophomore Moulid Somow (Utica, NY) via a corner kick. Connor Doogan (Belfast, Ireland) finished the service inside the 18 with a header, scoring his fourth goal of the season.

It remained 1-0 into intermission and for most of the second half until Camden’s James Whitty tied it in the 84th. It caused the game to go into two overtime periods, needing penalty kicks to decide the game.

The Cougars quickly took advantage making their first two attempts by Derek Desantanna and Craig Lynch, leading 2-1 after Herkimer’s Eddie Speed (Chester, Liverpool) missed his attempt. Generals’ goalie Morrice Baker (Bridgeport, CT) then gave his team new life when he saved Camden’s Kaixin Zhens attempt, allowing Doogan to come up big again, knotting it 2-2.

That momentum was soon lost when Femi Kaffo (London, England) missed his penalty kick, watching Camden’s Ethan Perry and Caio Figueira de Oliveira help the Cougars to a 4-2 advantage.

Up next for #5 Herkimer is #1 Genesee. The Cougars lost to #8 Bunker Hill in the opening round. The Generals and Cougars will face off on Friday (11/13) at 11 a.m. The game will be played at Wehrum Stadium.

As for #4 Camden, they’ll face #8 Bunker Hill in the NJCAA DIII Semifinal game at 4 p.m.
