#1 Cougars upset in opening round by #8 Bulldogs

HERKIMER, NY – Losing their first game of the entire season in the opening round of the 2015 NJCAA DIII National Championship Tournament, #1 Genesee lost to #8 Bunker Hill 2-1 in regulation on Thursday (11/12).

Genesee (19-1, 3-0) managed to score first in the 26th minute after leading scorer Richard Fernandez-Sarro took a Bradley Gollop pass for his 36th goal of the season.

Genesee kept the lead until the 40th minute when Bunker Hill’s Tavin Reid scored on a breakaway to knot it at 1-1, going into halftime with the same score.

Bunker Hill didn’t take the lead until the 84th, Eric Marakami scored his fourth goal of the season unassisted.

With the loss, #1 Genesee will face #5 Herkimer in a national consolation game Friday (11/13). Game time between the Cougars and Generals is 11 a.m.

#8 Bunker Hill will face #4 Camden on Friday (11/13) at 4 p.m. in the national semifinal at Wehrum Stadium.
