DELHI, NY – Combining for 15 individual regional championships on Saturday (4/30) at SUNY Delhi, the Herkimer Generals Track & Field program saw the women place first and the men place second in the region after 35 total events.

Helping the women to their sixth Region III Championship was an overall effort, placing first or second in all but three events, helping them to 248 points. Shannon Shirley (Bronx, NY) – who was named Region III Female Track Athlete of the Meet - led the way with three championships in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 4x100-meter relay. The freshman placed first in the 100 (13.67), 200 (27.74) and 4x100 (55.77). Helping Shirley in the 4x100 was Gabrielle Bridgewater (Fort Plain, NY), Katrina Murray (Rochester, NY) and LuAisha Charles (Middletown, NY).

Bridgewater, Murray and Katicia Sakona (Corning, NY) followed Shirley with two individual championships. Bridgewater placed first in the 400-meter hurdles (1:17.62) and 4x100 relay, Murray placed first in the 4x100 and discus throw (24.83m) and Sakona placed first in the long jump (4.36m) and triple jump (9.05m).

Getting one individual championship was Charles. She was the second leg of the 4x100 relay.

As for the men, they placed first or second in 12 events. Capturing six individual championships was Christopher Simmons (Utica, NY), helping the sophomore to Region III Male Track Athlete of the Meet. Simmons placed first in the 100 (11.42), 200 (23.07), 400 (50.69), 4x100 (43.96), 4x400 (3:31.48) and triple jump (13.54m). Joining Simmons in the 4x100 was Jhamel Cohen (Brooklyn, NY), Adrian Young (Newburgh, NY) and Tyrique Rideau (Westchester, NY). As for the 4x400, that group swapped out Young for Demetrius Moore (Cleveland, OH).

Manda and Rideau were the other two athletes to place first in an event. Manda did so in the 800-meter run, posting a 2:06.49. As for Rideau, he did it in the javelin, watching the captain reach 40.78 meters.

The team will ride the momentum gained over the weekend to nationals, which begins on Friday, May 6th. The new host in 2016 for the three-day meet is Westfield State University (MA) after Mohawk Valley Community College hosted the past couple seasons. The Generals have many student-athletes – male and female - who are in the top 10 in the nation in a specific event. The program will look to improve from 2015 where they had no national champions. Events are expected to begin at 9 a.m. EST every day of the national tournament.
