“4” for Herkimer Soccer on Pete McAvoy Night

Both women’s and men’s games were special last night as each team celebrated the memory of two beloved members from the Herkimer Generals family.  The night was dubbed Pete McAvoy Night in remembrance of Herkimer men’s soccer alumni, captain, and two-time national champion, #4 Peter McAvoy.  Pete suddenly passed away his sophomore year in the spring of 2014 from a rare heart condition.  To pay respect to their captain Herkimer soccer has retired Pete’s jersey #4.  Secondly the night honored Herkimer men’s soccer head coach Pepe Aragon’s father “Papi” who lost his long battle with cancer last June.  Both Pete and Papi continue to be an inspiration, and motivate all Herkimer athletes to play hard, represent well, and love their game.

Yesterday Herkimer Generals women’s soccer found themselves in an intense duel versus the Tompkins Cortland Community College Panthers.  Both the Generals and the Panthers came out strong the first half and fought back and forth for possession.  At the end of 45 minutes the teams remained deadlocked at 0-0, and it wasn’t until the beginning of the second half when #13 Mikayla Blumenstock scored one off of a dish from #7 Jenna Rogers.  Shortly thereafter Herkimer regained possession and the Generals offense was back at it.  After one shot rebounded off of Panther goalkeeper Molly Graves, it pin-balled between the cleats of the Herkimer offense and TC3 defenders until finally the ball was placed in front of the net by General #6 Alexys Bolton and finished by Blumenstock leaving the final score 2-0.

What seems less than a coincidence, later that night Herkimer men’s soccer also faced off against Tompkins Cortland, and our Generals men also scored two goals for a total of four overall on the night for Herkimer soccer. #4Pete
