“4” for Herkimer Soccer on Pete McAvoy Night

Both women’s and men’s games were special last night as each team celebrated the memory of two beloved members from the Herkimer Generals family.  The night was dubbed Pete McAvoy Night in remembrance of Herkimer men’s soccer alumni, captain, and two-time national champion, #4 Peter McAvoy.  Pete suddenly passed away his sophomore year in the spring of 2014 from a rare heart condition.  To pay respect to their captain, Herkimer soccer has retired Pete’s jersey #4.  Secondly the night honored Herkimer men’s soccer head coach Pepe Aragon’s father “Papi” who lost his long battle with cancer last June.  Both Pete and Papi continue to be inspiration, and motivate all Herkimer athletes to play hard, represent well, and love their game.

Last night our Herkimer Generals men needed only two to end the night victorious over the Tompkins Cortland Community College Panthers.  It seemed suiting that on Pete McAvoy Night, even though our Generals outshot the Panthers by double digits that only two found the back of the net.  Earlier that night Herkimer women’s soccer won their game versus TC3 also scoring two goals to nil, for a total of four overall for Herkimer soccer. #4Pete

Herkimer goals came early from pair #12 Will Meyer (Red Creek, NY), assisted by #23 Gianni Cognata (Cape Coral, FL) in the seventh minute.  The second goal was also scored in the first half from the sophomore duo #11 Eddie Speed (Chester, England), assisted by #8 Jordan Sailing (Haledon, NJ).

On the night head coach Pepe Aragon states, “Tonight was a special night honoring Pete and my Dad, “Papi.”  We played our hearts out tonight for a good 2-0 win.  I was proud of the guys for working hard for 90 minutes.  We will continue to honor both my Dad and Pete this season.”
