The Herkimer Generals Women’s Soccer team defeated the Genesee Cougars tonight 1-0 in the Region IIIA Semifinal game at Wehrum Stadium.  The intensity was high on both sides knowing that a loss would result in the end of a season.  The game was very back and forth to start and was stuck at a stalemate throughout the majority of the first half.  Weather may have played a significant role in this game as temperatures plummeted to the low thirties and a few flurries danced in the blustering winds.

Temperatures may have dropped but the Generals’ grit and resiliency did not.  At the 31st minute, Herkimer General #13 Mikayla Blumenstock (Poland, NY) received the ball from #7 Jenna Rogers (Port Leyden, NY) and crossed her defender within the eighteen twice before burying it in the back of the net for the lead.  Both Herkimer and Genesee had many other opportunities to score but goalies Honesti Crochran and Katie Tubo kept the nets locked down for the remainder of the game.  Herkimer now advances to Tompkins Cortland Community College this Saturday (10/29) at 1 p.m. where they will face off against the number one seed SUNY Broome Hornets for a chance to win the Region IIIA Championship and a trip to the National Championship tournament at Ocean County Community College in Toms River, New Jersey.
