Two All-Americans Receive National Championship Rings

(Joe Shinn and Wendall Williams were honored Wednesday in the varsity gym for their National Championship performances last Spring).

Herkimer, NY—Herkimer College recognized two Men’s Track & Field athletes for their individual National Championships earned last season: Joe Shinn, New Rochelle, NY,and Wendall Williams, Syracuse, NY, Business: Sports & Recreation Management major.

Shinn, a former student, received his championship ring from Director of Athletics Donald Dutcher and Dean of Students Dr. Matthew Hawes, won the decathlon in 2013 nationals with 5,672 points, earning him first team All-American. He also placed second in the 110-meter high hurdles and fifth in the high jump and 400-meter relay, earning second team All-American in the high hurdles.

Williams won the long jump and men’s 100-meter at the 2013 nationals, posting 25 feet 2 ¾ inches in the long jump and 10.85 in the 100. This earned him first team All-American honors as well. Williams also placed second in the 200-meter, third in the high jump and fifth in the 400-meter relay, capturing second team All-American in the 200.

Both athletes broke Generals records during the 2013 season, Shinn in the decathlon and 400-meter relay, and Williams in the 100-meter, 200-meter, long jump, triple jump, high jump and 400-meter relay.

Head Track & Field Coach Sharon Gleasman-Howell received her 10th, 11th and 12th individual National Championships. The Track & Field season begins at the end of March when the team travels to Ithaca College.
