Track & Field keeps their momentum going at SUNY Geneseo

GENESEO, NY – Having some athletes compete in two consecutive days, once on Friday at the Cortland Classic, then again on Saturday at the SUNY Geneseo Open, the Herkimer Generals track and field team did well, having the men place in the Top 10 in 17 events and the women do so as well in 10.

For the men, two runners did it in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash. They were Wendall Williams (Syracuse, NY) and Mich Brutus (Irvington, NJ). Williams finished in first place for the third time this season in the 100, posting an 11.17. As for Brutus, his 11.78 gave him a fifth place finish. In the 200, Williams took top honors again for the third time this season running a 22.49, while Brutus finished sixth with a 26.36.

In the 4X100-meter dash, Herkimer had both their ‘A’ and ‘B’ team place in the Top 10. The ‘A’ team consisted of Brutus, Jack Minasi (Newport, NY), Thomas Gibbs IV (Brooklyn, NY) and Williams. They finished in second (43.57), which was four seconds better than their ‘B’ team who ran a 47.29. That team consisted of Julio Galay (Bronx, NY), Anthony Scott (Poughkeepsie, NY), Chris Morales (Beacon, NY) and Divontay Huggins (Richfield, NY). They placed seventh.

The 4X400-meter relay team also did well, finishing in sixth (3:46.96) thanks to solid performances from Sam Morrett (Cohoes, NY), DaQuan Corbitt (Central Islip, NY), Brutus and Kasheba Pelle (Bronx, NY). Additionally, Corbitt’s 1:05.48 in the 400-meter hurdles gave him another Top 10 finish, getting seventh.

In the high jump, Minasi, Gibbs and Morales reached 1.88m, 1.73m and 1.73m with Minasi taking third place, Gibbs taking seventh and Morales taking eighth.

In the long jump Herkimer had 10 participants. Two of them placed first and fourth. They were Williams and Minasi, with Williams leaping 7.03m for first and Minasi leaping 6.54m for fourth.

In the triple jump Morales placed second (12.51m), Anthony Ciaccia (Selkirk, NY) placed fifth (12.30m), Morrett placed ninth (11.40m) and Justin Stewart (Brooklyn, NY) placed 10th (11.14m).

Edward Whitted III (Dryden, NY) and Ian Boyer (Central Islip, NY) came close to the Top 10, with Whitted III getting 11th in the shot put (10.80m) and Boyer getting 11th in the discus throw (28.43m).

For the women, they placed well in eight of their 11 events participated in Saturday. Leading off was sophomore Nadia Nowak (Albany, NY). She placed fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.58) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (28.10).

Right behind her was Victoria Campanian (Glenfield, NY), who finished in second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, posting an 11:49.09.

Nowak and Campanian then combined forces in the 4X400-meter relay, finishing in 10th with Haruka Murakami (Ibaraki, Japan) and Kaylyn Dickerson (Douglasville, GA), posting a 4:47.26.

Dickerson concluded the success on the track, placing fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:01.13) and high jump (1.43m).

For the throwers, Herkimer saw Keyla Richardson (Albany, NY), Natasha Woods (Syracuse, NY), and Tatiana Maldonado (Syracuse, NY) achieve three Top 10 finishes in the shot put and javelin throw. Richardson placed ninth in the shot put (9.97m), while Woods placed third in the javelin (28.58m) and Maldonado place ninth (23.08m).

Herkimer’s next meet was today (4/22). The team traveled to Ithaca College for their second to last meet before regionals. The meet was scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
