ROCHESTER, NY – Riding high on a six-game win streak into Rochester, NY Wednesday (9/17), the Herkimer Generals men’s soccer team ran out of time at John L. DiMarco Field, tying with NJCAA DI Monroe Community College 2-2 in overtime, having the game stopped due to darkness.

Herkimer (6-0-1) got the first goal in this one, just like they have all season. Sophomore Ben Polk (Banbury, UK) scored in the first minute on an assist from Jermaine Windster (Rotterdam, Holland) to make it 1-0. It was Polk’s 14th goal of the season, scoring first for the Generals in five of their first seven games this season.

Answering back just five minutes later was Monroe, on a goal from David Antunez making it 1-1. The scoring didn’t stop there however for the Tribunes, netting another goal in the 9th minute from Ienik Spencer on an assist from Antunez. It was only the second time this season the Generals found themselves down in a game and it stayed that way into the half.

Locking the score up at 2-2 in the second half was Polk, on an assist from Shane Jenkinson (Dublin, Ireland) in the 69th. From there, the game would go into overtime. In 10 minutes of overtime Herkimer outshot the Tribunes 2-to-1, having the game end after 10 minutes of play due to darkness. In the game, Herkimer outshot Monroe 32 to 13. 13 of the 32 shots were deemed shots on goal. As for the Tribunes, four of their 13 were deemed shots on goal.

In the net for Herkimer was freshman Alberto Sanchez (Yonkers, NY). It was his first start since the first game of the season. In 90 minutes Sanchez saved two.

The Generals will end their three game away stand this Saturday, September 20th when they host Clinton Community College at Wehrum Stadium. Herkimer is 4-0 at home and 2-0 in the Mountain Valley Conference. The team will look to keep that streak alive at 4 p.m. when play is scheduled to begin.
