Ward nets season-high four goals in win over Saints

(Teigha Ward nets her first goal of the game to make it 2-0 against the Saints in the 31st minute).

(Ward makes it 3-0 on a header in the 51st on an assist from Abigail Rohskothen).

HERKIMER, NY – Improving their Mountain Valley Conference record to 3-0 on the season, thanks in part to a season-high four goals by freshman Teigha Ward (Ilion, NY), the Herkimer Generals women’s soccer team defeated North Country Community College Wednesday (9/24) afternoon at Wehrum Stadium 5-1.

Herkimer (6-1, 3-0) was held without a goal in the game’s first 14 minutes until midfielder Danielle Nicosia (Oneonta, NY) netted her ninth goal of the season unassisted. Ward followed up right after Nicosia, netting her 10th goal of the season in the 31st minute, just 34 seconds after Nicosia scored to make it 2-0.

The Generals managed to increase the lead to 3-0 in the second half when Abigail Rohskothen (Walnut, CA) got her second assist of the season in the 51st. Scoring again was Ward on a deep cross from outside the 18.

The Saints managed to stop the bleeding in the 64th, scoring to make it 3-1 with less than 30 minutes left in regulation. Morgan Fountain netted the goal for North Country. However, Herkimer didn’t settle. Nicosia found Ward in the 65th and 70th minute to increase the lead back to four goals, accumulating another 2-0 run in the game.

Returning at goalie for Herkimer on Wednesday was freshman Sydney Stanley (Schoharie, NY). Stanley saved three shots in 90 minutes, coming close to her third shutout of the season.

Herkimer’s next game is a week away on Wednesday, October 1st. They’ll host Mountain Valley Conference rival Hudson Valley at Wehrum Stadium with a start time of 4:30 p.m.
