Generals’ defeat nationally ranked Vikings 2-1

(Teigha Ward nets one of her two goals on Wednesday to help the Generals defeat Hudson Valley 2-1).

(Sydney Stanley had five saves against the Vikings, helping the freshman to her fifth win this season).

HERKIMER, NY – Facing their third nationally ranked opponent this season, the Herkimer Generals women's soccer team remained undefeated against DIII competition, beating Hudson Valley 2-1 on Wednesday (10/1) at Wehrum Stadium.

Herkimer (7-1, 4-0) was in control of this one throughout the first half, netting six shots to the Vikings two within the first 35 minutes of play. Capitalizing on one of those opportunities was freshman Teigha Ward (Ilion, NY). The forward ripped a lazer from the right of the net in the 33rd to make it 1-0. Assisting on the play was Abigail Rohskothen (Walnut, CA). It was her third assist of the season.

The Generals maintained their solid play into the 57th when Ward scored again, this time from Danielle Nicosia (Oneonta, NY) to make it 2-0. It was Nicosia’s sixth assist of the season and Ward’s 15th goal. Ward has scored a goal in every game Herkimer has won this season, ranking fourth in the nation in goals scored.

Taking away some of the momentum in the 79th minute was Hudson Valley’s Molly O’Bryan, netting a goal past goalie Sydney Stanley (Schoharie, NY) to cut the deficit back to one (2-1). Stanley finished the game with five saves.

The Vikings carried that momentum into the final 10 minutes of play, coming close twice in tying the game. Sophomore Zaira Pabon (Liberty, NY) had to clear the ball in the 83rd and 88th after deflections off Stanley caught her out of the net for the Generals.

Herkimer will ride a three-game win streak into Broome Community College on Saturday (10/4). It will be another stiff test with the Hornets currently 9-2, winning their last five games. The Generals have proved they can beat the best at home, now they’ll have to do it on the road. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
