Peter McAvoy Night completed with victory

(Jermaine Windster scores his seventh goal of the season on an assist from Rodrigo Guerra in the 6th minute Wednesday).

(Connor Shearer nets his first goal of the season on a header in the 60th minute against the Vikings).

(Before the game started Wednesday, all in attendance sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" paying tribute to Peter McAvoy).

HERKIMER, NY – In their second to last home game of the season, before playing four of their last five games away from home, the Herkimer Generals men’s soccer team hosted Hudson Valley Community College at Wehrum Stadium Wednesday (10/1) and also paid tribute to their former captain Peter McAvoy, defeating the Vikings 3-0 on ‘Peter McAVoy Night’.

Herkimer (9-0-1, 5-0) scored their lowest number of goals in a win to date, looking more like the team which won the 2013 DIII National Championship behind McAvoy. The team’s first goal of the game was scored by sophomore Jermaine Windster (Rotterdam, Holland) on a set play in the 6th minute. Rodrigo Guerra (Newburgh, NY) found Windster on the right side of the net, like James Wilson (Woodford Green, England) found McAvoy eight times last season, including three times at nationals. Following suit, Windster ran to the fans and was mobbed by his teammates, giving Herkimer an early 1-0 advantage.

Herkimer didn’t get a two goal advantage until the 60th when Connor Shearer (Oneonta, NY) netted another header from Windster on a free kick Shane Jenkinson (Dublin, Ireland) initiated. It was Shearer’s first goal of the season, again reverting back to the 2013 team, which frequently scored on set plays.

The final goal was scored by MacIntyre Felton (Vestal, NY), his fifth goal in his last three games. Leading goal scorer Ben Polk (Banbury, UK) found the forward after one of his shots caromed off Hudson Valley’s goalie right to Felton, who made it 3-0 in the 82nd.

In goal for the Generals was Austin Santor (Chazy, NY). In 90 minutes the sophomore saved one shot, helping him to his sixth shutout of the season.

Herkimer will travel to play Broome Community College next. The Hornets are 2-8, losing their last three games. The Generals will look to improve their current win streak Saturday (10/4) with game time scheduled for 3 p.m.
