Generals defeat fourth ranked opponent, beat Hawks 1-0

(Sydney Stanley had three saves Wednesday, helping her to consecutive shutouts for the Generals).

UTICA, NY – Facing their second nationally ranked opponent in a week, the Herkimer Generals women’s soccer team did what they’ve done all season, defeat ranked competition, handing No. 7 Mohawk Valley Community College a 1-0 loss on their own field Wednesday afternoon (10/8).

Herkimer (9-1, 5-0) has managed to defeat two exceptional team on the road in the last five days, snapping win streaks in the process. Accumulating all the fire power for the Generals on offense has been DIII National Player of the Week Teigha Ward (Ilion, NY). The freshman netted her 17th goal of the season in the 53rd on an assist from Emily Rexford (Canton, NY) for her nation leading seventh game-winner of the season.

Ward has now scored Herkimer’s last five goals, helping the team through their roughest patch in the regular season, beating Hudson Valley, Broome and now Mohawk Valley.

Ward has not been the only person to shine however as her counterpart Sydney Stanley (Schoharie, NY) got her second consecutive shutout in as many games, holding two of the Top 5 scoring offenses in the region (Broome and Mohawk) to no goals. The freshman logged three saves against the Hawks Wednesday and 10 against the Hornets over the weekend to keep her team in both contests.

The road gets a little easier this Saturday (10/11) when the team hosts SUNY Delhi in their last regular season home game. The Broncos have lost their last four while Herkimer has won five. Game time at Wehrum Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
