HERKIMER, NY – Gaining more recognition for her solid play during the 2014 season, Herkimer Generals women’s soccer player Danielle Nicosia (Oneonta, NY) was awarded All-Region Player of the Year this week, helping her team to their first NJCAA DIII National Tournament appearance in nine years.

Nicosia, a Business: Business Administration major at Herkimer College, shined bright all season, accumulating 12 goals and eight assists in 15 games, but the sophomore certainly made her biggest mark in the Region III Tournament with two goals against Finger Lakes Community College in the semifinal at Wehurm Stadium then one goal against Hudson Valley in the championship game at Tompkins-Cortland Community College. It gave Herkimer the Region III ‘A’ Championship, but also snapped a six-game scoreless streak for the midfielder in the process. To date now, Nicosia has three game winners, none of them bigger than the one she had against the Vikings in a 2-0 win.

“Dani’s role as a midfielder in our system encompasses a lot,” said Head Women’s Soccer Coach Ryan Brooks-Newton. “She’s welcomed it and become a game changer in the process. She gets everyone involved because she has the ability to both pass and take defenders one-on-one. Even when she’s marked, Dani has the ability to make plays, causing trouble for many of her opponents.”
