Rexford and Nicosia help get third in national tournament

TOMS RIVER, NJ – With two goals from Emily Rexford and another from Danielle Nicosia on Sunday (11/16), the Herkimer Generals women’s soccer team defeated Rock Valley in the NJCAA DIII National Third Place game 3-0, collecting their ninth shutout of the season in the process.

Herkimer (15-3, 7-0) got their first two goals of the game from Rexford (Canton, NY). Her first came in the 30th unassisted and the second came in the 57th from Nicosia (Oneonta, NY). It helped the sophomore to her fifth goal of the tournament, the most of any athlete at the national tournament, scoring over 60 percent of her goals on the season when her team needed it most.

As for Nicosia, she too had five goals combined for the Generals in regional and nationals. The midfielder scored in both wins for Herkimer at Ocean County College, netting the game winner against Genesee on Thursday and the last goal of the game against the Golden Eagles Sunday. Sunday’s goal came in the 75th on an assist from Lillie Williams (Herkimer, NY). It helped the Region III Player of the Year to her 14th goal of the season, scoring in four of her last five games played in as a General.

In goal for Herkimer was Sydney Stanley (Schoharie, NY). The freshman earned her eighth shutout of the season, saving nine shots in 90 minutes, helping her to the All-Tournament Team along with teammate Emily Rexford.
