Nicosia and Ward All-American members for Generals

HERKIMER, NY – The Herkimer Generals women’s soccer team had two players named to the 2014 NJCAA DIII All-American Team this week. Midfielder Danielle Nicosia (Oneonta, NY) was named to the first team while forward Teigha Ward (Ilion, NY) got second team honors.

Nicosia, a Business: Business Administration major at Herkimer College, made her biggest impact in regionals and nationals for the Generals. The captain accumulated five goals and one assist in five games, helping her team outscored opponents 12-4 en route to a third place finish at nationals in New Jersey. In total Nicosia finished the season with 14 goals and nine assists in 18 games. She had five games with two or more goals and at least one assist in eight games.

Ward, an Education: Physical Education major at Herkimer College, scored the eighth most goals in the nation in 2014, netting goals in 11 of her first 13 games as a freshman. Of her 23 total goals, 10 were game-winners for the Generals, helping the team to a 15-3 record in 2014. During regionals and nationals Ward made more of an impact distributing, getting four of her seven total assists in five games, giving opponents a lot to handle with more Generals to worry about on the offensive end.

“I’m very proud of my girls,” said Head Women’s Soccer Coach Ryan Brooks-Newton. “They’re talented, but the heart and dedication each puts in has resulted in a lot of acknowledgment. It’s been an honor coaching these two individuals as they have helped put our program back on the map!”
