Generals end weekend with loss to Genesee

HERKIMER, NY – Facing their second Western New York Athletic Conference opponent of the season on Sunday (2/1), the Herkimer Generals women’s basketball team lost to DII Genesee Community College 63-53, dropping seven of their last eight home games.

Herkimer (6-14, 3-8) came out strong in the first five minutes, leading by two (7-5) after an offensive rebound and put back by freshman Alexandria Hardy (Kerhonkson, NY). She finished with 10, scoring double figures in both games over the weekend at home.

Unfortunately for Herkimer,  Genesee captured the lead shortly after Hardy’s bucket, but kept it within two possessions throughout the half with makes by Kristy Wallace (Frankfort, NY), Hardy, Eriel Jenkins (Detroit, MI), Nicole Doolen (Ilion, NY), Erica Tracy (Cobleskill, NY) and Chelsea Jory (Herkimer, NY). It kept the game close for the Generals, only down by six (27-21) at half.

The six-point lead quickly got up too double digits (39-25) within the first five minutes of the second half. It stayed there throughout the half despite getting 10 points via the free throw line. Sophomore Emily Rexford (Canton, NY) led the way, sinking eight from the charity stripe, helping the guard finish with 10, but it wasn’t enough as the team lost by 10 (63-53) by the end of regulation.

Herkimer’s next game is on Wednesday, February 4th. They’ll travel to take on Fulton-Montgomery who is currently fourth best in the Region III and winners of their last six. Game time on Wednesday is scheduled for 5 p.m.
