Win streak improves to five with Broome win

(Femi Kaffo gives his team the lead in the 10th minute after missing the penalty kick).

HERKIMER, NY – Playing their first home at Wehrum Stadium in 21 days, the #5 Herkimer Generals men’s soccer team won their fourth consecutive home game, defeating SUNY Broome 2-0 in regulation.

Herkimer (8-2, 3-1) netted a goal in each half while outshooting the Hornets 15-to-1 in the game. The Generals gave Broome fits on the defensive end, watching their wing players get behind the defense numerous times to set up Herkimer’s offense. Case in point, in the 10th minute, captain Femi Kaffo (London, England) got behind a Hornet defender, causing him to take Kaffo down to evade the one-on-one with the goalie. The planned almost worked out with Kaffo’s penalty kick being saved by goalie Tyler Elliott on the initial shot, but the save caromed right back to Kaffo, giving Herkimer a 1-0 lead on his sixth goal of the season.

Moulid Somow (Utica, NY) - Herkimer’s other wing player - scored the second goal of the game in the 61st, blasting a shot from outside the 18 with his left foot into the back of the net after it hit the top of the cross bar then ricocheted to the ground and into the net. The goal was Somow’s first goal of the season. Assisting on the play was freshman Maans Soerensen (Stockholm, Sweeden).

Sharing time in goal Saturday was Morrice Baker (Bridgeport, CT) and Ian James (Saint Kitts, Caribbean Sea). Baker earned his eighth shutout in 85 minutes played, not allowing a goal in the team’s last five games. James played the final five minutes of the contest, not recording a save.

The Generals will host their second consecutive game at Wehrum Stadium this Wednesday (10/7). They’ll face Mohawk Valley Community College who is 5-4-1. The Hawks have played well as of late however, going 3-0-1 in their last four games. The tie came against nationally ranked Hudson Valley at home. Game time between these two conference foes is scheduled for 7 p.m.
