Herkimer Generals men’s soccer defeated the region III powerhouse SUNY Broome Hornets in a match up last Saturday (9/24).  The afternoon was a proud one for Head Coach Pepe Aragon in more ways than one.  SUNY Broome Head Coach Chris Riley was a former player at Herkimer under Coach Aragon and led Herkimer to two final four NJCAA DIII National Championship appearances, and was selected to the NJCAA All Region Team, the All East Coast Team and was named the Regional Tournament MVP.  Coach Riley welcomed Coach Aragon onto the Hornet’s home field with the utmost respect as he paid tribute to Coach Aragon’s father “Papi” with a moment of silence before the game.

This game was Herkimer’s biggest challenge to date as SUNY Broome was one of the few remaining teams undefeated in the region.  The Generals came into it focused and ready as they took an early lead.  Just over seven minutes into the game Herkimer’s #8 Jordan Sailing (Haledon, NJ) scored the first goal assisted by freshman #24 Luke Murphy (Glasgow, Scotland).  The score remained 1-0 at the half and Herkimer didn’t score their second goal until halfway through the second half from #24 Murphy assisted by #3 Chris Cornwill (Sunshine Coast, Queensland).  The Generals’ defense was relentless as they held the Hornets scoreless leaving the final score 2-0.
