Generals’ solid play continues at home

Wbball 2014 21 1

HERKIMER, NY – The Herkimer Women’s Basketball team kept their hot shooting alive on their home court Monday, defeating Cayuga Community College 79-60 in the varsity gym.

The defense was just as strong as it was against the Broncos in their last home game, starting out the first two minutes of regulation with three steals. Those turnovers resulted in six points, highlighted by an ‘and one’ attempt by Emily Rexford (Canton, NY). Then a three-point field goal by Alyssa Craig (Fonda, NY) gave the Generals their first lead of the game (10-8), never relinquishing the lead from that point.

A Samantha Randio (Ravena, NY) Kaylyn Dickerson (Douglasville, GA) and Shahadah Williams steal and lay up built the lead to 19-8 before the Generals started to stretch the defense with hot three-point shooting. Rexford hit three three-point field goals from the left corner, and also assisted on a lay up to Korey Bunal (Rome, NY), giving the Generals a 20-point lead (31-11).

Herkimer finished the first half with seven three-point field goals; three from Rexford, one from Randio, one from Raven Griffin (Syracuse, NY) and two from Craig. At intermission, Herkimer led by 25 (46-21). Craig was the high scorer with 11 points.

In the second half, the Spartans got as close as 19 points down (79-56), but by that time there was only a couple minutes left in regulation. Providing the spark in the second half was Williams, scoring 12 of her 16 points in the paint. After Williams, Rexford finished with a team-high 17, Randio finished with nine, Dickerson finished with six, Griffin finished with six, Bunal finished with 13, Craig finished with 13 and Cheyenne Richards (Little Falls, NY) finished with one.

The Generals next game is on Wednesday (1/22). They’ll host North Country in the varsity gym, looking to keep their winning ways against the Spark. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
