HERKIMER, NY – Scoring their highest point total thus far this season, thanks in part to stellar defense in the first half, the Herkimer Generals Women's Basketball team defeated SUNY Delhi 73-29 Saturday afternoon, at home, in the varsity gym.

Herkimer 5-7 (2-2 MVC) held the Broncos to zero points in the first 14 minutes of competition, building a 17-point lead (17-0). Center Kaylyn Dickerson (Douglasville, GA) took full advantage of the team's strong 1-2-2 full court pressure, scoring five of the teams' first seven points, aided by two offensive rebounds. Adding to the double digit lead was Emily Rexford (Canton, NY), Korey Bunal (Rome, NY), Raven Griffin (Syracuse, NY) and Shahadah Williams (Syracuse, NY). All scored buckets due to high defensive pressure, resulting in easy offense on the other end.

After the Broncos scored their first points of the game (17-2), Herkimer went on a 10-4 run to end the half, with Williams scoring six of the ten points, accumulating one steal and two rebound in the process. Williams finished with 11 points.

The beginning of the second half was owned by Rexford, scoring eight points, six from two three-point makes, building the lead to 27 (36-9) with 15 minutes left in regulation. Then teammate Alyssa Craig (Fonda, NY) found her stroke from three-point land, sinking three consecutive shots in the span of five minutes, giving Herkimer a 65-20 lead. Craig finished with nine points.

Rexford answered her teammates hot shooting with two more three-pointers on consecutive possessions, giving Rexford five three-point field goals in the second half, and 17 points by games end. Buckets by Cheyenne Richards (Little Falls, NY), Dickerson and Bunal ballooned the lead to 49 (73-24) before the Broncos ended the game on a 5-0 run.

Dickerson finished as the high scorer with 18 points. The only other General to score in double figures was Samantha Randio(Raven, NY). Bunal added five and both Griffin and Richards added two.

The Generals next game is Tuesday (1/14). They'll face SUNY Adirondack for the first time this season. The game is slated to start at 5 p.m. A win over the Timberwolves would give Herkimer an above .500 record in the Mountain Valley Conference. They currently are 2-2.
