Swimming & Diving places well after long break

ROCHESTER, NY – Back in action after a long winter break, the Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving team resumed competition at Monroe Community College Saturday (1/18). When the Generals finished swimming in their 16 combined events, the team finished 3rd (234 points), men finished 5th (74 points) and women finished 3rd (234 points).

Brandon Paul (Gloversville, NY), Austin Davis (Frankfort, NY) and David Stanley (Bronx, NY) all participated in three events at the Tribunes facility. Top 5 finishes came from Stanley and Paul. Stanley finished in fourth place (1:06.92) in the 100 yd. Backstroke, while Paul finished in fourth place also (25.55) in the 50 yd. Freestyle. After that, Paul placed sixth in the 200yd. Freestyle, Davis finished ninth in the 100yd. Breaststroke, Stanley finished sixth in the 50 yd. Freestyle, Stanley finished sixth in the 100 yd. Freestyle, Davis finished eighth in the 100 yd. Freestyle, Paul finished sixth in the 200 yd. Breaststroke and Davis finished seventh in the 200 yd. Breaststroke.

As for the women, they had 10 Top 5 finishes. The only event they didn’t place in the Top 5 was the 200 yd. Freestyle. Stealing the show with five of those Top 5 finishes was Kaitlin Winnie (Accord, NY). Winnie had one second-place finish (50 yd. Freestyle) and four third-place finishes (400 yd. Medley Relay, 50 yd. Freestyle, 100 yd. Freestyle, 200 yd. Individual Medley, 800 Freestyle Relay).

After Winnie, Erin Hutchison (Macedon, NY) also had five Top 5 finishes. She placed third in the 400 yd. Medley Relay (5:19.90), second in the 1650 yd. Freestyle (22:42.92), third in the 200 yd. Breaststroke (3:12.52), fourth in the 200 yd. Individual Medley (2:48.77 and third in the 800 yd. Freestyle Relay (10:22.11).

Capturing three Top 5 finishes were Alexandra Whalen (New Hartford, NY) and Kristina Reynolds (Sherburne-Earlville, NY). Both helped each other to third-place finishes in the 400 yd. Medley Relay and 800 yd. Freestyle Relay, while Whalen placed third in the 200 yd. Backstroke (3:02.79).

Finally, freshman Tianderah Twichell (West Winfield, NY) had a second-place finish in the 100 yd. Breaststroke (1:34.43) and 10th place finish in the 100 yd. Freestyle (1:22.75).  

The Generals next meet is this Saturday (2/1). They’ll be traveling to Genesee Community College for a 1 p.m. start. It will be the team’s second time at the Cougars facility this season.

  • 1650 yd. Freestyle (2nd place 22:42.92) Hutchison*
  • 200 yd. Freestyle (7th place 2:40.04) Whalen
  • 100 yd. Breaststroke (2nd place 1:34.43) Twichell

*Erin Hutchison swam the 1650 FR for the first time ever, qualified for nationals AND set a new school record in this event.
