Randio helps team to sixth consecutive home win

HERKIMER, NY – The Herkimer Generals Women’s Basketball team continued their strong play at home Wednesday night against North Country Community College, defeating the Saints 79-63 in the varsity gym.

Herkimer 7-9 (3-4) has now won six consecutive games at home, averaging 68 points per game. The team is led by multiple players in their attack, on Wednesday, Samantha Randio (Ravena, NY) stepped up, leading the team with 21. Randio had a highlight reel play at the end of the first half, going coast to coast before time expired, hitting a runner which gave her team a 12 point lead (42-30) at intermission. Randio led the Generals with 10 points in the first and 11 points in the second half. She also added seven rebounds and seven assists to her totals.

Two freshman also had standout performances, each scoring in double figures. Emily Rexford (Canton, NY) and Korey Bunal (Rome, NY) combined for 34 points, with Bunal finishing with 19 (14 rebounds) and Rexford finishing with 15. Bunal led the attack early against the Saints, scoring four of the team’s first six points. Kaylyn Dickerson (Douglasville, GA) followed Bunal with a field goal in the paint, then Rexford hit two consecutive three-pointer to give Herkimer a 11-8 lead. Rexford finished the game hitting three from deep range.

The only other Generals to score in double figures Wednesday was Shahadah Williams (Syracuse, NY). Always patrolling the baseline, Williams finished with 13 points, eight coming in the first half. She also added 13 rebounds to her totals.

The last two contributors in the win were Alyssa Craig (Fonda, NY) and Dickerson. Craig finished with six points on two three-point field goals which came in the first half. The second gave Herkimer a 35-21 lead with just under three minutes left before intermission. As for Dickerson, four of her five points came in the first half.

The Generals next game is this Saturday (1/25) against Hudson Valley. The Vikings lost to the Generals 58-39 as a visitor the last time they played. Herkimer 1-8 away from their home floor. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
