MSOC 2013 23 12

HERKIMER, NY – Herkimer Generals Men's Soccer defender Peter McAvoy (Dundee, Scotland) received his NSCAA National Junior College Player of the Year award last Saturday (1/18) at the NSCAA All-American Luncheon in Philadelphia, PA.

McAvoy appeared in 18 games for the Generals this fall, starting every one of them on the defensive side of the ball. This didn't stop him from establishing himself as a clutch goal scorer for the Generals however, accumulating 15 goals. Three of those goals came in the NJCAA DIII National Championship Tournament, all game-winners, giving the program its 10th championship and McAvoy's second as a player under Head Coach Pepe Aragon. McAvoy finished the season with seven game-winning goals, which was second-best in the nation. McAvoy is Aragon’s sixth national player of the year.

On the defensive side of the ball, McAvoy helped hold opponents to five goals the entire season, racking up 13 shutouts and outscoring the competition 61-to-5.

“Pete had a dream come true season,” said Head Coach Pepe Aragon. “He was our team captain, leader of our defense, our leading goal scorer and scored three game-winning goals in the national tournament. As a coach I could not ask for more. I am so proud and happy for Pete, he truly deserves this award!”

In his two years at Herkimer County Community College, McAvoy played in 40 games, scoring 16 goals and tallying four assists. More importantly, he only lost three games, totaling 37 wins.
