Herkimer College Phaethon Awards

Herkimer College’s arts and literary publication, Phaethon.

Herkimer College’s arts and literary publication, Phaethon, was recently recognized by the Community College Humanities Association (CCHA) in their annual contest.  Due to the 2020 contest not being held due to the pandemic, both the 2020 and 2021 issues were considered.

Phaethon 2020:

  • 2nd Place, Best Magazine Eastern Region, Small Colleges
  • Best Creative Nonfiction: 1st Place: "Are We Just That Primitive" by Dillon Cowen (Waterville, NY)
  • Best Short Stories: 1st Place: "God Wears Ruffled Socks" by Raychel Alvarez ’20 (Brooklyn, NY)

Phaethon 2021:

  • 3rd Place, Best Magazine, Eastern Region, Small Colleges
  • Best Short Stories: 3rd Place, "The Ivory Cabinet" by Carynn Bohley ‘21 (Salem, NY)

Phaethon competes in the Eastern Division, which is comprised of community colleges in Connecticut, Washington DC, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Puerto Rico.

The publication, featuring content from students, faculty, and staff has won many awards over the last several years.  In 2019, the CCHA awarded Phaethon "best magazine" amongst small colleges in the Eastern Division. Phaethon is advised by faculty members Andrew Devitt, Matthew Powers, and Blake Pitcher.
