Baseball 5 02 2013 Kyle GarrisonWatertown, NY – Herkimer split their double-header with SUNY Jefferson on Thursday at Jefferson County's Duffy Fairgrounds. The two teams had also split a doubleheader at Herkimer on Tuesday.

HCCC and Jefferson entered this week in first and second place in Region 3's Eastern Division. The Generals had a two-game lead on the Cannoneers, and that situation remains unchanged after the Tuesday-Thursday four-game series.

Cody Newbigging led the Herkimer attack on Thursday by hitting safely five times during the afternoon.

Game One

The game was a battle that Jefferson won 11-8. Herkimer started the scoring in the top of the first when Newbigging singled in two runs to open up a 3-0 lead. Jefferson got one back in the bottom of the first with an RBI single. A Jefferson leadoff double in the bottom of the third inning, followed by two singles, tied the game at 3-3.

Herkimer answered with four runs in the top of the fourth, keyed by another two-RBI base hit by Newbigging, to make it 7-3. Jefferson, however, plated eight runs in the bottom of the of the fourth inning. Five Jefferson hitters had RBI-hits as they exploded to chase starter Ben Moxley.

The Generals loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh inning, but a key ground-ball double play ended the threat, and Jefferson held on for an 11-8 victory.

Game Two

Kyle Garrison started for HCCC. Garrison slowed down the Jefferson bats in Game Two, working a complete seven-inning game, allowing five hits, four walks, and one earned run, while striking out four. Garrison moved to 5-1 on the year with the 12-1 victory.

General Dan Smith broke a 1-1 tie with a fifth-inning solo home run. Herkimer then added five RBI-singles to score six runs in the top of the sixth inning, and Brandon Overstreet hit a grand slam in the seventh inning for a 12-1 Herkimer win.
