Generals finish with Capital District Classic
TROY, NY – The Herkimer Generals track and field team competed in their final regular season competition Saturday at the Capital District Classic. The men finished with 12 Top 10 finishes and the women finished with five.
For the men, in the 100 and 200, Wendall Williams (Syracuse, NY) and Mich Brutus (Irvington, NJ) accumulated three Top 10’s. Williams finished in first place, running a personal best time of 10.68 in the 100, while Brutus finished in ninth place in the 100 (11.42) and eighth place in the 200 (23.09).
Sophomore Joseph Shinn (New Rochelle, NY) also kept up his consistency, placing first in the 110-hurdles (15.18), ninth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.72) and ninth in the pole vault (3.60m).
Freshman Philip Tanner (Deposit, NY) captured an eighth place finish in the 3000-meter Steeplechase with a time of 11:31.82.
The 4X100 relay team, which consisted of Thomas Gibbs IV (Brooklyn, NY), Brutus, Jack Minasi (Newport, NY) and Williams got their second straight second place finish in as many weeks, posting a 44.08.
In high jump, Williams and Minasi both jumped 1.83 meters, good enough for fifth place. Then in the long jump, Minasi captured third place, jumping 6.64 meters and seventh in the triple jump, finishing with 13.00 meters.
For the women, Victoria Campanian (Glenfield, NY) and Haruka Murakami (Ibaraki, Japan) got the Generals their first two Top 10 finishes in the 5000-meter run. Each placed ninth and 10th, with Campanian running 21:04.44 and Murakami running 21:04.92.
Campanian then captured a first place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase, posting a time of 11:43.91.
Keyla Richardson (Albany, NY) and Natasha Woods (Syracuse, NY) rounded out the group with Richardson placing seventh in the discus (25.13m) and Woods placing fourth in the javelin (29.83m).
Herkimer’s next meet is this coming Saturday (5/3) at regionals. SUNY Delhi will be the host school for the event. Most of the Generals who participated this season, qualified for the event. The time of the meet still needs to be determined.
