Craig leads Generals with 22 on Senior Night

(Alyssa Craig scored 13 of her 22 in the final five minutes Wednesday on Senior Night in the varsity gym).

HERKIMER, NY – The Herkimer Generals women’s basketball team was led by senior Alyssa Craig (Fonda, NY) on Senior Night, seeing her score a team-high 22 points in her final home game at Herkimer. Craig’s efforts were squandered however as the team lost to Mountain Valley Conference opponent Schenectady County College Wednesday night 84-74.

Herkimer 10-4 (6-8) couldn’t miss from three-point range in the first half, burying seven of them. It kept the team in the game, trading leads four times in the final five minutes, but the Royals still managed to lead the Generals at half by one (37-36). Hitting the field goals from long range were Emily Rexford (Canton, NY), Raven Griffin (Syracuse, NY) and Craig. In the span of five minutes, Rexford hit three, Griffin hit two and Craig hit one. Rexford finished the game with 21 points, while Griffin finished with 10.

The second half had three lead changes the first four minutes, but a 12-6 run by the Royals gave them a 10 point lead (61-51) which got to 19 points (78-59) with six minutes left in regulation. Helping Herkimer get it back within 10 was Korey Bunal (Rome, NY) and Craig. Bunal scored all her 14 points in the second half before giving way to Craig who scored the Generals final 13 points, seven coming from the foul line. The team got within 11 points, but ran out of time for the comeback.

Herkimer’s other two seniors, Samantha Randio (Ravena, NY) and Kaylyn Dickerson (Douglasville, GA) scored four each. Randios’ came in the second half, while Dickersons’ came in the first half.

Herkimer’s next game is their last of the regular season. The team will travel to North Country on Saturday (2/22) looking to beat the Saints for the second time this season. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
