Herkimer County Community College Receives 2026 NJCAA National Championship Host Site of the Year Award

Herkimer County Community College has been named the recipient of the NJCAA National Championship Host Site of the Year Award, recognizing the college’s commitment to providing an outstanding championship experience for student-athletes, coaches, athletic staff members, and fans.

This award is presented annually to an NJCAA championship host site that demonstrates excellence in championship operations and event management. The selection process includes feedback from student-athletes, coaches, administrators, sport chairs, and NJCAA national office staff.

Herkimer County Community College hosted four NJCAA national championship events during the most recent spring, fall, and winter cycle, including the 2025 NJCAA Division III Softball World Series, the 2025 NJCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships, and the 2026 NJCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship.

During the softball championship, severe thunderstorms forced games to be moved to another site, with tournament staff coordinating adjustments to provide the best possible experience for student-athletes. At the soccer championships, heavy snowfall and unsafe playing conditions resulted in the postponement of a full day of competition before college leadership implemented alternative solutions to keep the tournament on schedule. During the men’s basketball championship, a village-wide power outage interrupted competition, and Herkimer County Community College staff worked closely with NJCAA officials and championship staff to safely continue the game once conditions allowed.

“Donnie and his team at Herkimer annually provide an outstanding student-athlete experience for our Division III Championships on their campus,” said Brett Monaghan, NJCAA Vice President for Championships, Membership, and Sports Governance. “From hosting softball, to soccer, to basketball, the Herkimer team, regardless of any challenges that come up, always exhibits the true championship spirit of the NJCAA.”

Monaghan also praised Herkimer County Community College’s ability to respond to challenges throughout the championship season, including severe weather conditions and unexpected interruptions, while maintaining a positive experience for participating teams and fans.
