MVCAA’s Breaking Barriers to Youth Success Program received a grant from the Taco Bell Foundation to provide direct financial assistance to youth ages 16-26 who are facing barriers in school, employment, or life. To qualify for the grant, youth must reside in Herkimer or Oneida County and be within 200% of Poverty Guidelines. To help youth in our community gain stability and self-sufficiency as they enter adulthood, MVCAA will provide direct financial assistance to help break down the barriers faced by low-income youth. This may include assistance with: housing (first month’s rent/security deposit); furniture and/or household items; transportation to/from school or interviews; food; professional work attire; school supplies. The overall goal of this program is for youth to be successful in school, employment, and life. In MVCAA’s experience, it is imperative that the basic needs of youth are met in order for them to focus on school and/or obtaining stable employment.

MVCAA provides holistic support to individuals and families living in poverty. Regardless of the reason an individual comes to MVCAA for assistance, the Agency strives to provide any support or resources for which the individual is eligible. Individuals are automatically referred to any MVCAA programs or programs operated by partner organizations from which they would benefit. Often, families and individuals that come to MVCAA for assistance may receive support from multiple funding streams. For example, if they are parenting a child under age 5, they will receive a referral to our Head Start program. If they are at risk of homelessness, they will be referred to our Homeless Intervention program. MVCAA operates over 30 programs for which youth may be eligible, in addition to funding from this grant.
