Herkimer Men's Soccer loses last second heartbreaker in National Title Game

Herkimer, NY - For 89 minutes and 59 seconds, it was another classic Richland College-Herkimer College Men's Soccer Championship battle. Then in an instant, everything changed.

With one second left on the clock, Herkimer was called for a penalty in the defensive box that led to a Richland penalty kick, which they converted for a 2-1 win over the Generals in the 2019 NJCAA Division III Men's Soccer National Championship game at Wehrum Stadium in Herkimer, NY. The loss, the first of the year for Herkimer, gave the Generals a final record of 20-1 for the 2019 season.

After a first half goal gave Richland a 1-0 lead at halftime, the Generals fought back and took control in the second half, with Mupenzi Irakiza (Syracuse, NY) getting the tying goal with about 17 minutes remaining. Alex Charles (Christ Church, St. Kitts) hit the post on a shot with about 5 minutes remaining before the penalty call and kick ended the game and gave Richland the title.

Tyler Dobinson (Exmouth, England) and Ryheim Hinds (Bridgeport, CT) were named to the All Tournament Team. Tinius Klausen (Oslo, Norway) was named the Defensive Player of the Tournament.
