Herkimer Women stay hot with 53 point win over Tompkins-Cortland

HERKIMER — If it hasn’t become clear already, the Herkimer Women’s Basketball team is a force to be reckoned with.

They asserted their dominance yet again, beating Tompkins Cortland Community College 86-33 on Tuesday night in their second home game of the season.

The Generals had won only five games last season; albeit winning six more due to teams who had to forfeit their regular season.

 This year, they’re already 4-0.

“In years past, we may beat a team by 30 or 40 points, but never really scored to that margin,” said Women’s Basketball Head Coach Gabrielle Coffey. “This year is awesome because we have a lot of players who are different sizes and have different skill-sets, and it helps be more creative on both ends of the floor with what we’re doing. Everyone is bought in to our team philosophies, and it’s a joy to coach.”

The majority of the General’s points were scored on leaks from defensive rebounds. Their half-court man-to-man set flustered the Panthers, forcing 32 turnovers, which resulted in easy uncontested layups at the other end of the floor. Five Generals finished with double-digit point totals.

Herkimer’s Leading Scorers:

Sophomore guard Lexi Debeatham (Albany) - 13 points

Sophomore guard Sam Pena (Bronx) - 10 points

Freshman center Alysia Roldan (East Greenbush) - 10 points

Freshman guard Amber Been (Bronx) - 10 points

Freshman guard Junasia Lanier (Albany 10 points

All 13 players on the roster scored at least one point.

“I think any time everyone gets time on the court and you play well as a team, it’s a good game,” added Coffey. Nearly everyone scored a point today, and that’s important too.

The Lady Generals don’t play until this Saturday, November 16th against Corning Community College as part of a two game road trip. The following day, they play Finger Lakes Community College.
