Young has record-breaking day as Generals take 2 from Hornets

Daigneault Action vs MV home

Herkimer, NY - PJ Anadio has seen a lot of impressive performances in his 11 seasons as the Herkimer Generals Softball coach, but what Kayla Young did on Wednesday afternoon stands alone.

Young, a freshman infielder/pitcher from Baldwinsville, NY, slugged 3 Home runs and had 11 RBI's in Herkimer's 26-0 Game 2 win over the SUNY Broome Hornets that gave the Generals the sweep of their doubleheader. The 26 runs scored were a season high in a game for the Generals as they improved their record to a 10-0 on the season.

While Young had a record-breaking game, she wasn't the only one that ignited the Generals offense in Game 2. Caitlyn Zagas (Baldwin, NY) went 3 for 5 with 4 RBI's and Melissa Daigneault (North Greenbush, NY) had 3 hits and scored 5 runs for the Generals. Victoria Borowski (Harriman, NY) and Thalia Pantoja (Poland, NY) each also contributed 2 hits apiece.

Alexis Garrison (Clifton Park, NY) and Michaela Ponticello (Gloversville, NY). Garrison got the start, going 3 innings and allowing 4 hits while striking out 2. Ponticello threw the last two innings, striking out 2 Hornet batters and allowing no hits.

In the opener of Wednesday's doubleheader, won by the Generals 11-1, Daigneault smashed a home run and had 4 RBI's. Madison Ihnat (Boca Raton, FL) continued her torrid pace at the plate, as she had 2 hits, which included a home run, and 3 RBI's. Aubrey Ketcham (Otisville, NY) and Emily Beames (South Glens Falls, NY) each added 2 hits in the win. Beames also got the start for the Generals, as she went all 5 innings, scattering 5 hits and only giving up one run while striking out 5.

Herkimer will look to extend their winning streak this weekend when they take on the Cayuga Spartans in a 4 game series on Saturday and Sunday April 10th and 11th. Saturday's games will take place at the Herkimer College Softball field before the Generals hit the road on Sunday and travel to Auburn, NY to take on the Spartans at Falcon Park. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 12 Noon.
