The Generals Add Another Win to the Streak

W. Soccer HVCC

Troy, NY-Herkimer Generals Women’s soccer team made the trip to Troy to take on Hudson Valley.

With the Generals on a 3 game winning streak, they looked to keep the momentum going into the tough end of season schedule.

Izzy Smith returned to the goal, with Kurstin Gay donning her outfielders shirt once again. Riley Wisheart was named on the bench for the first time this season, looking to add some experience to the attacking side of the field. Piper Keyes is still in a walking boot so the pacey forward was on water bottling filling duties once more.

The Generals jumped out to a great start, attacking swiftly and looking dangerous from the off, and it would be ten minutes into the game when the Liz and Lyds connection would strike! Liz Cingranelli finding Lydia Reimer on the left hand side of the box, Lydia rocketing a shot into the top left hand corner leaving the goalkeeper no chance of saving. The Generals then lost control of the game, with Hudson Valley moving the ball around really well, the Generals could not get control. Hudson were knocking on the door really hard, and only a couple of fine saves from Izzy Smith and some fantastic defending from Donata Oaksford and Natalie Little would keep the score at 1-0. Right before half time the Generals doubled their lead, with Liz Cingranelli getting on the end of a Lydia Reimer pass and coolly slotting home.

Half time 2-0 Generals.

The second half would see the Generals come out swinging, getting a grip on the game, and starting to control the pace of the game. Kenzie Magnusson would fire a long range volley over the goalkeepers head and into the net to give the team a 3-0 lead before turning provider for Taylor Wright. Magnusson played a ball into Wright in the box, and smashed the ball off the inside of the near post and into the net for her first goal for Herkimer.

A momentary lapse in concentration from a free kick would see Hudson quickly run through on goal and fire a shot past Smith to pull a goal back. The Generals were disappointed to lose the shut out but almost instantly marched down the field and had Kurstin Gay fire in her first goal of the season. This marks the second season in a row the experienced goalkeeper has notched at least one goal for the Generals, a feat I am not sure has ever been achieved by previous Generals goalkeepers, a stat that will separate Gay from every other goalie in Herkimer history.

The game would slowly wind down and eventually end as a 5-1 win for the Generals.

Next up a trip to SUNY Broome on Saturday October 1st, 2022 at 1pm.
