Generals drop first home game to nationally ranked Lazers

(Herkimer's I'Asia O'Garro scores two of her eight from the top of the key Saturday against Onondaga).

HERKIMER, NY – After leading for most of the way in the first half, the Herkimer Generals women’s basketball team allowed 50 points in the second, losing to No. 9 ranked Onondaga Community College on Saturday (12/13) 80-55.

Herkimer (4-5, 1-2) managed to capture the lead early after sophomore Emily Rexford (Canton, NY) connected on two free throws, going on a mini 5-0 run herself with a three-point field goal made the previous possession. Rexford finished with a team-high 11.

The Generals built the lead to eight (23-15) after an Alexandra Hardy (Kerhonkson, NY) field goal with just over seven minutes left, but the Lazers countered with a full court man-to-man press which eventually allowed Onondaga to recapture the lead (27-26) with 1:20 left before intermission.

A pair of free throws by Rexford and Tracy caused the fourth lead change of the game until a three-point field goal for Onondaga created the fifth and final lead change, giving Herkimer a 30-28 deficit at half.

In the second, Onondaga quickly built the lead to double digits, seeing Brittany Anderson finish with a game-high 28, knocking down several three-point field goals in the second half. It helped the Lazers win their second consecutive games against conference opponents.

Herkimer’s next game is against Fulton-Montgomery Community College on Thursday, January 8th. The Raiders will ride a five-game win streak into the contest and Herkimer will look to even up their current conference record which stands at 1-2. Game time at Herkimer is 4 p.m.
