String Orchestra of NYC
The String Orchestra of New York City will perform holiday hits at Herkimer College on Friday, Dec. 13. The concert is free and open to the public.

The String Orchestra of New York City (SONYC) will be presenting a holiday concert at Herkimer College in conjunction with the Robert H. Wood Great Artists Series. The performance is scheduled for 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 13 in College’s Sarkus-Busch Theater. The performance is open to the public and free of charge.

SONYC, founded in 1999, comprises some of this nation’s extraordinary string players in a critically acclaimed tour de force ensemble. A conductorless chamber group, SONYC’s members rehearse in a collaborative effort that allows each musician to have an impact on the artistic process. The flexibility and intimacy of a string quartet are thus fused with the power and scope of an orchestra. Its dedicated musicians are international competition winners, members of renowned chamber ensembles, and highly regarded soloists. SONYC has performed more than 350 shows and its members have taught hundreds of master classes for children of all ages and backgrounds, across the United States as well as in New York City’s public schools.

Attendees will hear such favorites as Carol of the Bells and the Nutcracker Suite, as well as more formal pieces like Christmas Concerto (Concerto Grosso in G minor, op. 6#8) and Al Mio Gioir il Ciel si fa Sereno.

The Robert H. Wood Great Artists Series is a result of a generous endowment made to the Herkimer County College Foundation by the late Robert H. Wood, a long-time resident of Ilion, NY.
