Herkimer Women continue hot start with dominant win over Hudson Valley

Herkimer, NY -  The chants grew louder and louder as the Herkimer Generals lead swayed between single and double digits in the second half.

De—Fense. De--Fense. De--Fense.

The key was stopping HVCC’s three-point attack, and preventing any sparks from beyond-the-arc to get the Vikings back into the game

They did just that on Saturday afternoon, defeating Hudson Valley Community College 85-54, improving to 3-0 to start the season.

“(Emily) Erickson and (Alexandra) Rifenburg are their best 3-point shooters and we worked on face-guarding Erickson and not helping off either of those players,” said Herkimer Women’s Basketball Head Coach Gabrielle Coffey. “We were successful and worked hard all game. Offensively, we knew they would press and trap and we took care of the ball and kept it moving.”

The Generals strong man-to-man defense held both Erickson (8 points) and Rifenburg (6 points) to season-lows in points in a game.

Herkimer was led in scoring by sophomore guard Lexi Debeatham (Shaker) with 22 points (12/12 from the free-throw line), freshman guard Junasia Lanier (Albany) with 17 points, freshman center Alysia Roldan (East Greenbush) with 12 points, and freshman guard Amber Been (Bronx) with 10 points.

Herkimer’s next opportunity to keep its winning streak alive is Tuesday, November 12th, at home against Tompkins-Cortland Community College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
