Herkimer County Community College is proud to announce the launch of a new Associate in Arts degree program in English, offering students a comprehensive introduction to literary study while strengthening their writing, analytical, and communication skills. Designed for transfer to a four-year institution, the program provides a dynamic and inclusive learning experience that celebrates the power and richness of language and literature.

Students in the English A.A. program will explore a diverse range of authors, historical periods, and genres, gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural and social contexts that shape literary expression. The flexible curriculum allows students to focus on areas of personal interest, such as specific authors, stylistic movements, or literary traditions, while close interaction with faculty and peers fosters an engaging and collaborative academic environment.

Graduates of the program will be able to examine literature through its cultural, social, and historical contexts, interpret works using literary terms and theoretical approaches, and produce written work with clarity, purpose, and audience awareness.

“The English A.A. program provides students with a strong foundation in critical thinking, research, and communication, skills that are valuable across all disciplines and professions,” said Professor of English Lisa Elwood-Farber, Ph.D. “It prepares students not only for further academic study, but also for success in a wide range of careers that value creativity, analysis, and effective communication.”

The English A.A. degree prepares students for transfer to bachelor’s programs in English and related fields, as well as for diverse career paths in advertising and marketing, content creation, editing and publishing, media and communications, public relations and grant writing, education, nonprofit organizations, and public service.

With a strong foundation in reading, writing, research, and analysis, English graduates enter the workforce with adaptable skills that are in demand across a wide variety of industries.

The College is accepting applications now for both Spring 2026 and Fall 2026. For more information or to apply, visit herkimer.edu/EnglishAA.
