Herkimer sweeps SUNY Jefferson; Secreti throws no-hitter
Herkimer, NY – The Herkimer College softball team swept a doubleheader from SUNY Jefferson on Tuesday by the scores of 21-1 and 9-1. Both games ended early due to the eight-run rule.
The first game was dominated by Herkimer pitcher Toni Secreti who threw her first collegiate no-hitter. She went five innings, giving up one unearned run in the first and struck out five hitters. Herkimer sent 14 hitters to the plate in the first as they scored 10 runs.
Sammy Smaldone got things started early with a solo home run and then came back up and hit a two-run double. Steph Siriano added a two-run homer in the first with her second at-bat. Delaney Buckley kept her home run streak alive as she belted a two-run HR in the first as well, her third round tripper in as many games. Ashley Sterritt added her fourth homer of the season in the fourth, also a two-run job. Smaldone finished the day two-for-four, with a double, homer, and three RBIs. Also having big games were Steph Siriano (1-2, HR, 4 RBI's), Alyssa Balfe (2-3, RBI) and Rebekah Kitchen (2-4, 2B, 4 RBI's).
In Game Two, Alyssa LaLonde got the ball for Herkimer and she was sharp. She allowed a lead-off a triple to open the game but settled down to get the next two before allowing the run to score on a throwing error. LaLonde only allowed two more hits and no more runs the rest of the way while striking out four and walking none. The offensive charge was led by sophomore Jess Patterelli as she went four-for-four with a double, home run, and three RBI's. Alyssa Balfe also had a great game as she went two-for-three with a triple and two RBI's. Delaney Buckley, Kat Dolly and Caitlin Sanders added base hits while Courtney Tasco crushed an RBI-double.
Herkimer will back in action Wednesday afternoon. They will travel to Corning to take on the Red Barons of Corning CC.
